Stop Making These 4 Mistakes in Cold DM'ing

my tweet

I got pumped up to send mooore cold DMs. That's why I sent 37 cold DMs last week. And got 4 responses.

Whether you're DM'ing to expand your network or to pitch your services, avoid these 4 cold DM'ing mistakes at all cost.

Mistake #1: Too Long

According to Interseller, cold messages with 200 characters or less get more responses than those with numbers exceeding that.

Interseller

You're sending a message to busy people. Don't waste their time. Keep your message short, but sweet.

Mistake #2: Not Using Their Name.

I sent the same DM to the 37 persons. The only thing that I did was I used their name. Don't just say "hi" or "hello."

Use their name for personalization.

Example

Bad DM:

shitty dm

He didn't use my name. It felt spammy. I ended up tapping the second button. 😈

(I bet you're going to do the same, right? Who's the boy that he's pointing anyway? lmao)

Good DM:

love this dm

He used my name. It didn't feel spammy. I ended up tapping 'accept' and responded to it.

Mistake #3: No CTA

Imagine someone sent you a message like this. Would you respond to this without any hesitation?

shitty dm (1)

I want to respond to this, but... I didn't know what to say. Still, this DM sleeps in my message requests.

He could've end the message with a question as a CTA.

A clear CTA guides the person on what he/she should do next.

So don't forget to send a DM with a CTA. šŸ˜‰

Mistake #4: Talking About Yourself

Marketing and cold DM'ing has the same principle:

It's not about you. It's about them.

Bad DM:

shitty dm (2)

Before sending a cold DM, always remember to answer this question:

What's in it for them?

Question of the day:

What's the worst DM that you've EVER received?
